Ross Provence is an sculptor and artist. Known for his three-dimensional artistic creations, it did not start that way. It started with a horse.

It Began with a Horse

Ross’s father had a hobby – horseback riding. His dad rode hunters and jumpers in many San Diego County horse shows and participated in De Anza Trail rides from Calexico to Riverside.

Ross grew up around horses, first in the hills overlooking Mission Valley then on the 40 acre ranch his father built in the Bonita Valley east of Chula Vista, California. Watching his dad glide a horse over obstacles, Ross was entranced. He had to try it and at ten years old, he joined his dad, learning the sport.

When it came time to start college, Ross chose U.C. Davis and its agriculture program. But Ross’s talent pulled him toward his father’s occupation: law. After law school he joined his father’s law firm.

The Stirring of an Artist

Ross was a successful lawyer which gave him the ability to travel and enjoy the galleries and art of the Southwest. Sculpture called to him. He began collecting art he liked and thought: I could do that!

He enrolled in art courses at Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California, spending many weekends learning the craft and many off hours perfecting the techniques in his home studio.

The Result

Ross Provence is a highly skilled master. He turned natural ability and his passion for realism into breathtaking technical proficiency. The result is exquisite representational art.

Noted pieces of Ross’s art include busts for friends: “Arizona Joe,” “Gage Skinner,” and “Olaf Wieghorst.” His wildlife art includes, “Buffalo”, and, of course, “the Horse.”

Most of Ross’s projects are for friends. He works for love of the process. It is not a business and he is unlikely to take on a commission unless he counts you as a friend.

He loves to talk about his work and invites students, hobbyists and aspiring professionals to come see him in studio.
